This writing sample comprises two sections of an assignment for my ‘Advanced College Essay’ course. The essay conducts a close reading of the film We Need to Talk about Kevin and explores how the film’s portrayal of an unconventional mother challenges traditional notions of motherhood and monstrosity. Through this analysis, We Need to Talk about Kevin brings to light the idea that societal pressures on mothers may be the true underlying monster in this narrative.
